The village
A crescent of golden sand, a row of palm trees, and a village that still keeps the slow rhythm of the Atlantic.
Praia da Luz — the Beach of Light — began life as a fishing community tucked into a sheltered bay between dark volcanic cliffs, six kilometres west of Lagos. For centuries the village lived by the sea's clock: boats launched at dawn, nets mended on the sand, the catch carried up to a handful of seafront houses.
The sea still sets the pace today. A palm-lined promenade traces the bay, the old 17th-century fort watches over the beach, and Roman ruins beside the village are a quiet reminder that this shore has been lived on for two thousand years. Luz has grown into a small, unhurried resort — but it has kept its character: family-run cafés, low white houses, and an evening stroll that still feels like the village's main event.

A bay made for slow days
The beach shelves gently into the Atlantic, sheltered enough for children and warm enough for long swims through the summer. Behind it, the promenade — pale stone, slender palms, a few white benches — is the village's living room: morning coffee, an ice-cream at dusk, the place everyone meets.
For the more restless, the Rocha Negra clifftop path leads west toward the village of Burgau — a walk of cliffs, sea and sky that is the western Algarve at its most beautiful.

What's on, year-round
Late August
Festa do Banho 29
The village's signature celebration. On the 29th of August the community gathers at the water's edge for the Festival of Bathing — a joyful, free ritual of sea swims, music and grilled sardines that has marked the end of summer in Lagos and Luz for generations.
Summer evenings
Sardine Festival & MMFEST
Through the summer months the seafront comes alive: the Praia da Luz Sardine Festival celebrates local food and community, while the MMFEST brings three nights of live music and a festival atmosphere to the bay.
Year-round
Village life
Mornings begin at the seafront with coffee and the day's catch; afternoons drift between the sheltered beach, the palm-lined promenade and the clifftop walk toward Burgau. A handful of family-run cafés, an old fort and Roman ruins keep the village's quiet character intact out of season too.

Formula 1 Portuguese Grand Prix
F1 returns to Portugal after six seasons away, racing at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimão — under an hour's drive from Praia da Luz. Three days of practice, qualifying and the race itself bring the world's fastest cars and a festival atmosphere to the western Algarve.
